The accident happened on the A52 route, near the Palacios de Sanabria area. According to information from the emergency services of the Castilla and León region, the car carrying the Jota brothers went off the road and caught fire. Emergency medical teams at the scene confirmed that both victims died at the scene.

The tragedy occurred just 10 days after Jota’s wedding to his long-time girlfriend Rute Cardoso. The couple has three beautiful children together.

Notably, Diogo Jota’s last post on social media shared happy pictures from his wedding day, with the caption: “June 22, 2025. A nod to forever”.

The post received more than 190,000 likes and thousands of condolence comments (after Diogo Jota’s death).

Just a few months ago, Diogo Jota shared about his family, especially his three children. The Portuguese striker confided: “When I get home after the match, I still have to fulfill my responsibilities. I have 3 children and I don’t have time to rest. Sometimes, I want to take a nap, but they are excited because their father is home and wants to play with them.

Yesterday, after the match, I was going to take a break, but one of them asked to play football. You have to be ready to satisfy them. I always want to be the best father I can be. Even though I am tired, I still try to set an example and be there for my children.”

Liverpool FC released an official statement: “Liverpool FC is deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Diogo Jota. It has been reported that he has died in a car accident in Spain along with his brother Andre.

Diogo Jota began his career in his native Portugal with Paços de Ferreira, making his Portuguese league debut in 2015. He joined Atletico Madrid in 2016 but did not make a single appearance in La Liga. Jota was then loaned to Porto and impressed with eight goals in one season, paving the way for a move to Wolves in 2017 for a fee of around £12m.

At Wolves, Jota was instrumental in helping the team gain promotion to the Premier League with 17 goals, and continued his impressive form in the following two seasons with a total of 16 Premier League goals. In the summer of 2020, he moved to Liverpool for a fee of £45m and quickly became an important cog in Jurgen Klopp’s tactical system.
